After more than 20 years of dieting, I finally found the person who gave me hope that I could achieve the physique I had always dreamed of, without frustration. I lost 22 kg in 6 months, but beyond the number, I gained energy and tone, even though I wasn't athletic to begin with.

After trying all the trendy fat-loss diets, Dukan, Weight Watchers, Nature House, Laetitia finally had her wake-up moment.

She weighed 80 kilos at 1.50m, and had to come to terms with buying herself size 46 pants.

That was the last straw.

At that point in her life, she didn't just feel like her stomach was too big, she felt like her whole body was too wide.

And she couldn't accept that.

Watching her stomach grow bigger every day in the mirror, feeling like there was nothing she could do about it and that she just had to endure it.

From a body-shape perspective, when she told us about her desire to lose belly fat, and after seeing photos of her physique at the start of coaching, we immediately noticed that she was storing visceral fat.

This is not something to take lightly.

Beyond the aesthetic side, when you have too much visceral fat, there is a real health issue.

Broadly speaking, we're talking about back pain, which is not inevitable, chronic fatigue, poorer physical condition with difficulty moving around, and higher risks of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

It was through optimizing her nutrition and strength training that Laetitia was able to lose visceral fat.

In short, here's what it did for her:

  • She gained more day-to-day comfort: she no longer has back or knee pain, and she can now appreciate the reflection she sees in the mirror.
  • She lost 27 kilos in 9 months, without loose skin.
  • After 2 years of coaching and losing 30 kilos of fat, one third of her starting weight, she became athletic, ran a half marathon and, more importantly, reconnected with her body and got her energy back.

Through Laetitia's case study, we're going to focus on abdominal fat, and explain how to make it disappear.

What is visceral fat?

You shouldn't confuse it with subcutaneous fat, the kind you can pinch under your skin.

Visceral fat is the fat mass that builds up around the internal organs in the abdomen.

It has a reputation for being harder to lose, but strength training tackles this problem at its root.

Be careful, not all exercises are equally effective for flattening your stomach.

Some are even counterproductive.

We'll explain that a little further down.

What causes visceral fat?

There are many factors, but in the vast majority of cases, you need to pay attention to these 3 points:

  • A sedentary lifestyle: despite her job as a nurse, and therefore being on her feet all day and walking a lot, Laetitia still gained visceral fat.
    That's why we recommend strength training to all our clients, whatever their job may be.

  • Stress: cortisol is a hormone produced in response to stress.
    Under the effect of an enzyme, inactive cortisone in adipose tissue is transformed into cortisol, which promotes the accumulation of visceral fat.
  • Snacking: often it's conscious, but for Laetitia it wasn't really.

“I'm a self-employed rural nurse, and there's this culture of offering a little cake, a coffee, etc. I didn't realize the impact of snacking. I wasn't eating a lot at once, but I was picking at lots of little things throughout the day.”

“One time I kept track over the week and calculated it: I ended up at more than 1300 Kcal of madeleines and cakes that I had eaten during my work week”

So you also need to watch out for what we could call "unconscious snacking".

If you want to lose visceral fat, a small cookie here, a piece of cheese there, and it's the perfect recipe for overeating calories, which will negatively impact your daily caloric deficit.

Why is visceral fat dangerous for your health?

We're pretty laid-back people and we don't like being alarmist, but in this specific case, the danger is very real.

“When I contacted you, I was getting close to the age at which my parents died. They clearly had an unhealthy lifestyle, which didn't work in their favor”

Fat wraps around the veins connecting the intestines to the liver.

When you have excess visceral fat, that fat enters your veins, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

On top of that, this fat produces substances that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer in menopausal women.

The major risk when you lose visceral fat too quickly

Imagine that you've lost all, or a very large part, of the weight you wanted to lose.

You're proud of yourself and of what you've accomplished.

You've successfully faced moments of doubt, questioning, and loss of self-confidence.

But you did it!

You've become the champion you wanted to be.

Only now, you're left with loose skin around your stomach.

The medical world will probably tell you it's nothing, because it trivializes this aspect of abdominal fat loss as just a consequence you have to accept.

You'll be told that "it's only aesthetic" after all...

And yet, let us tell you this: loose skin is not inevitable!

As for your emotions, we think, without being too far off, that if you end up with the “apron” effect on your body, you'll stop yourself from fully enjoying your new life, even though you worked hard for it.

You won't dare wear a swimsuit, or tight-fitting clothes.

You'll go back to feelings like shame and disgust with yourself.

We both agree that we don't want that to happen to you, right?

So yes, surgery is an option to remove that apron.

But surgery often means a string of time-consuming medical appointments, anxiety at the thought of going under the knife, pain, and recovery afterward...

And in the end, living with a scar for the rest of your life.

We don't know about you, but that doesn't seem trivial to us.

Especially if you can avoid it!

What strategy should you use to eliminate visceral fat?

Before we were able to see the photos showing that Laetitia was dealing with excess visceral fat, we took the time to exchange emails and learned that she:

  • Was not athletic at all;
  • Had never done strength training;
  • Worked as a hospital nurse alongside dietitians, she thought she knew nutrition well and only had 2 or 3 things to adjust, in her opinion.

Right from the start, to counter the effects of visceral fat on her health and also to address the fact that she felt too wide, we immediately wanted to focus on making her look as elongated as possible.

There's no need to do cardio to lose belly fat.

We created a tailored strength training program for her so she could first build her back and stop it from causing her pain.

The results are visible.

Of course, the difficulty of the exercises increased very gradually.

We didn't want her to lose too much weight too quickly, which is the number 1 cause of loose skin.

We aimed for a maximum weekly weight loss of 1% of her total body weight, or 800 grams per week.

You may feel like that number is arbitrary, but it's a calculation we made based on Laetitia's situation and parameters, and one we would make for you too if you decide to work with us.

Which exercises are best for women who want to lose visceral fat?

Through Laetitia's journey, we'd like you to understand that, depending on your body shape and the areas of your body you want to transform, not all exercises are equally effective.

To beat visceral fat, strength training as a whole is your best ally.

It speeds up metabolism, which encourages your body to burn more calories, even at rest.

Burning visceral fat while you sleep, sounds pretty nice, doesn't it?

As for exercises, the ones that aim to tighten the abdominal area are a very good solution.

That includes traditional plank exercises, but not only those.

Doing abs to eliminate visceral fat is a mistake

Doing ab exercises when you have excess visceral fat, whether you're a woman or a man, is shooting yourself in the foot.

Why?

Quite simply because when you have fat mass behind the organs, it pushes the stomach forward.

If you do ab exercises, it will increase the size of your muscles and in a way "make your stomach stick out more".

That's what's called muscle hypertrophy.

Here too, we both agree that this isn't the result you want, right?

Now you know why we didn't include ab exercises in Laetitia's program.

How to get a long, lean silhouette

From our perspective as coaches specializing in women's body transformation, taking Laetitia's goals and constraints into account, we put together a relatively short, low-intensity training program.

Since she isn't very tall (1.50m), the aesthetic goal of her program was to make her silhouette look as elongated as possible.

Lean, defined muscles, an athletic look and above all, tone!

We also decided to slightly round out her shoulders to make her waist stand out.

Her biggest insecurity was feeling too wide.

Then we increased the difficulty of her exercises as she progressed, with the goal of making her strong, because a stronger woman is, by definition, a more toned woman.

It was impossible to ask her to go to a gym, she wasn't ready to face other people's взглядs on her body.

That's why she started with strength training at home, with an emphasis on working the back muscles using a TRX and resistance bands.

An athletic back, so she could start making peace with her body and then gain more day-to-day comfort by no longer suffering from back pain.

Here are a few examples of exercises we gave her:

Until the day she was able to do pull-ups!

Laetitia dreamed of doing push-ups, but she didn't feel capable of it.

We started gently with back-strengthening work.

We asked Laetitia to do incline push-ups at 45° with her hands resting on her couch.

If we had made the mistake of asking her to do regular push-ups, she wouldn't have been able to do it and it would have discouraged her.

After several months of muscle strengthening and building confidence, we guided Laetitia toward strength training exercises such as:

Beyond strength training, what else can help you reduce visceral fat?

If you want to get rid of this fat that's ruining your life for good and stop yo-yo dieting forever,

Eating should stay a pleasure!

What you need to know is that at one point in our lives, we came close to obesity.

We struggled with our relationship with food, we had eating disorders.

Today, the approach we advocate has nothing to do with slogans like “Eat move” and “5 fruits and vegetables a day”.

Goodbye to the “without” diets you've already known.

We helped Laetitia adopt a flexible diet.

Did you have an extra-long workday and don't have the energy to make yourself a balanced meal?

Are you going to eat a ready-made meal from the supermarket?

That's OK!

We'd like you to accept the fact that you don't have to be perfect, and to feel good about that.

Don't aim for perfection, aim for gradual improvement.

In fact, one of our mantras is “1% better every day”.

Since 2015, we've only tried to be better than yesterday and not as good as tomorrow.

That's the first thing we teach all our champions.

To come back to nutrition, where we want to take you is toward understanding the calorie and nutritional value of foods.

Our goal: for you to reduce your calories, eat until you're satisfied, and enjoy it.

Without that sense of pleasure, it won't work.

That's OK too!

A key step in reducing calories is knowing how many you consume per day.

The goal isn't to "eat less" food to lose weight, but to make better food choices.

Another very interesting effect of knowing the calorie value of foods is that you'll feel fuller.

Because hunger is your number one enemy when you want to lose weight.

By paying attention to your food volume and the satiety index of your meals, you'll be much less tempted to snack.

Since your body will be getting the nutrients it needs, your brain won't hijack your day in search of extra calories.

With a good understanding of your calorie needs, the value of foods, and reduced or eliminated urges to snack, you'll lose fat effectively and sustainably.

Sleep, another ally in losing visceral fat

Do you remember the last time you didn't get enough sleep? Did you have “food slipups” and feel guilty?

If you answered yes, know that it's normal!

So there's no need to feel guilty if it happens again.

On average, people who sleep little eat 385 more calories per day.

On top of that, short sleepers tend to seek out calories from foods that contain less protein and are higher in fat.

If you don't sleep enough, it will be harder to control yourself.

In fact, fatigue will make your choices less rational.

So you'll be much more tempted to snack.

Laetitia also had that problem, since she sometimes had workdays where she got up at 4 a.m. and didn't get home until 10 p.m., which left her with at most 6 hours of sleep.

She had cravings, but in the end, she found a solution.

“Changing your environment is the key: if you don't have packs of cookies at home, you're less tempted”

Of course, because of her job, Laetitia has a lifestyle rhythm that may not be yours.

That's why we recommend that you sleep as much as you need.

Ideally, you'd get 9 hours of sleep per night, but if you get 7 hours, that's already very good.

The 3 pillars for eliminating visceral fat

At the end of her journey, after 1 year of coaching and losing 30 kilos of fat, Laetitia became a true athlete, ran a half marathon, and changed physically and mentally.

If she was able to do all that, it's because she:

  • Created a caloric deficit by consuming fewer calories than her body needed, while doing strength training at home.
    The combination of the two allowed her to reach her goals, reconnect with her body, and lose that visceral fat that had been ruining her life for far too long;
  • Learned the value of foods, both nutritionally and calorically.
    She was able to eat while giving her body what it needed, without losing the sense of pleasure connected to food;
  • Improved her sleep, even though she got up very early and had extra-long work hours.
    Thanks to that, and to the fact that she learned the value of foods, she was able to effectively reduce snacking.

One last interesting and unexpected fact: she gained more day-to-day comfort, but she also improved her health markers:

“I get blood work done every year, and the one after 2 years of coaching was clearly better for cholesterol and blood sugar”

On top of beating the fat, she transformed herself, made peace with her body, and even gained quality of life and better health.

Before contacting Jérémy, I was overweight. I was still carrying 10 extra kg after my pregnancies. I had been carrying those kilos for 13 years. I tried all kinds of different diets (chronobio, Dukan...) and none of them worked long-term. Honestly, I was really starting to think it was hopeless.

Despite having a varied athletic background, I was no longer making progress after a difficult ordeal and the effects of menopause. 10 months ago, I joined Jérémy's program feeling deeply exhausted, both physically and mentally, with the sense that I'd tried everything without ever being able to stick with it over time.

Hello, I'm 52 years old, and I had been struggling for more than 5 years trying to lose weight. I was exhausting myself doing cardio, Pilates, basically trying a bit of everything, and when it came to food, I thought I was eating well.

A difference of about 10 kg (weight loss) and a more toned physique.

Not everything was perfect. Sometimes, I didn’t follow the program, and Jérémy helped me let go of the guilt. Those moments are part of the process, what matters is doing your best and sticking with it. Sometimes, I felt like it was pointless, then I looked at the results. I was proud of myself. Other times, I was extremely consistent and it was absolutely on fire.

Before Jérémy, my body was a real obstacle and I didn’t understand why my weight was going up even though “I wasn’t eating that badly.”

After Jérémy, I understood: eating healthy is not the same as fat loss. There are so many factors to take into account, and I learned them by his side.

I chose to start coaching after gradual weight gain that was worrying me. Despite that, the professionals I saw did not take me seriously, since my BMI was considered "normal." I was often told that "after 40, that's completely common." And yet, deep down, I knew something was wrong. I dreamed of it, and Jérémy made it happen!

How can I describe the incredible life-changing experience of meeting Jérémy, a coach who is educational, kind, and always listening?
The ideal coach, really!

I’ve never exactly been naturally slim, but I have to admit I really went off track in recent years, gaining 20 kg in 5 years without managing to turn things around.
Despite my various attempts, cardio, diet support, EMS electrostimulation classes, and even "good resolutions", none of them worked.
So in the end, I had more or less resigned myself and accepted it: it was too late to change, and I would just live with the consequences of letting myself go for the rest of my life, dissatisfied...

Then, this summer, came the wake-up moment: I couldn’t keep up with my sons and my husband or fully enjoy family activities.

I reached out to Jérémy after gaining weight following a thyroidectomy, combined with the onset of menopause. I was stuck in limiting beliefs, convinced, after reading many testimonials from women in my situation, that it was almost impossible to lose weight after that kind of surgery and with menopause.

I felt uncomfortable in my body and unable to seriously take control again. Thanks to Jérémy, I learned how to use the app intelligently and manage my calories and macros day to day. I realized just how much of a calorie surplus I was in without even noticing it. I wasn’t eating that much, and yet my little handfuls of hazelnuts were ruining all my efforts.
