The method for getting visible abs as a woman

Summary...

Stop doing ab exercises.

Do you dream of a slim, well-defined waist and visible abs? Seriously, don't do ab exercises! If you keep doing crunches, hollow holds, bicycle kicks, oblique side bends... You risk thickening your silhouette and increasing your waist measurement.

Why? Because training a muscle group (in this case, your abs) means making it grow by definition. To be more precise, when we say make muscles grow, we're talking about muscle hypertrophy. Hypertrophy is the increase in muscle fiber size in response to a training stimulus.

Your abdominal muscles, like all other muscles, respond to stress by adapting. If that stress is repeated and intensifies over time, the muscles develop. So if you train your abs, you'll make them grow, and your waist measurement too.

Just like you wouldn't overdo arm training because you don't want them to get too big, the same goes for your abs. So how do those women get visible abs and a slim waist?

What are abs for?

We all have abs. They're often hidden under a layer of fat, but rest assured, they're there.

If we didn't have abs, we probably wouldn't be able to stand upright. Kind of like overcooked pasta...

Understanding abdominal muscle anatomy

The abdominal wall is a muscle group made up of several muscles:

  • The transverse abdominis, the deepest abdominal muscle, whose muscle fibers run horizontally and keep the organs in the abdomen in place.
  • The obliques (external and internal), two muscles that allow trunk rotation and side bending.
  • The rectus abdominis, used for posterior pelvic tilt and trunk flexion, this is the muscle that, when visible, forms the famous six-pack.

For a woman, for example, full-body strength training, a few specific rectus abdominis exercises, and a lower body fat percentage can produce this result:

The role of abs in posture

Your abs are stabilizing muscles for the spine. They're what allow you to stand uprighte, lean forward without tipping over, or carry your 10-ton handbag on one side without falling over.

When you carry a heavy load on one side only, the opposite side of your abs contracts to keep your torso upright and keep you standing. Try it quickly: if you have a pack of water next to you, hold it on one side and you'll see, the magic will happen.

The abdominal muscles allow you to:

  • Perform spinal flexion and lean forward or backward without falling.
  • Perform a posterior pelvic tilt.
  • Perform lateral flexion of the spine to the right and left without tipping over.
  • Maintain intra-abdominal pressure, even when you're carrying a heavy load (imagine a beach ball you're holding underwater in a pool. The water puts pressure on the ball, but the air inside allows it to resist that pressure and not deform).

So there are all kinds of everyday situations where you naturally use your abs in an optimal way, for the simple reason that you're using them for their original function: maintaining your posture.

That's why, to develop your abs harmoniously, targeted exercises are not a good idea. We generally include very few of them in our champions' training programs. We favor compound exercises that train the abs in a balanced way.

If you want a slim waist and feminine visible abs, you shouldn't overdo ab exercises, unless you want to end up with a Ninja Turtle stomach!

How can a woman get visible abs?

But Jérémy, if I shouldn't keep doing crunches and other ab-specific exercises to keep a slim waist while still having visible abs, what should I actually do?

The right training program to get visible abs as a woman

Whether you want to lose weight or build muscle, your training program and the exercises you're going to do should first and foremost serve your body transformation goals.

If you want results, we don't recommend just copying a few sets of movements you found online.

For the simple reason that they don't take into account: your genetic potential, your medical history, your physical and recovery capacities, your aesthetic goal, your fat distribution, the time you have available... Just to name a few.

Ab exercises to avoid or prioritize

We design our training programs based on a rigorous application of, and deep respect for, the human body and how it naturally works. In this section, we're going to tear down a few fitness myths to help you avoid injury or wasting time on inappropriate, or even useless, movements.

First, we strongly advise against all shearing movements to work the oblique abdominal muscles for one simple reason: they can be dangerous!

The torso rotation exercise for abs is definitely one we'd never give to one of our champions.

Your abs are not made to handle exaggerated, unnatural twisting under load. Not only can that damage your spine without giving you the results you want, it can also thicken your waist by targeting the obliques directly.

For example, here's the case of Stéphanie, one of our champions. You can see in her before photo that she has wide hips. Specifically targeting those obliques would have emphasized that width, which would have been unflattering for achieving the harmonious body she wanted.

Which ab exercises help strengthen the pelvic floor?

Ab exercises are often recommended for maintaining the pelvic floor and preventing urinary leakage, which affects many women. In principle, that's a good idea, but be careful in practice. Excessive use of this type of exercise and frequent repetition can damage the body.

The abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor are closely connected. Proper ab training can support and strengthen the pelvic floor, which is beneficial for women at every stage of life. The problem is that not all ab exercises are suitable for this situation.

Poorly performed movements, like classic crunches, can sometimes make problems like urinary leakage worse. If that's your case, we recommend focusing on specific exercises like Kegels, which directly target pelvic floor strengthening.

Your body is naturally capable of contracting, so it's better to prioritize global compound exercises that respect functional muscle anatomy, in other words: use muscles for their original function.

Do you want to work your obliques and lower abs safely ?

We recommend doing leg raise exercises such as reverse crunches, hanging knee raises, or incline garhammer, for example.

Nutrition for visible abs

Do you dream of a flat stomach and well-defined abs? Your diet is the key. Yes, it accounts for 99%!

There's no point grinding through endless sets of ab exercises, that's not how you'll lose abdominal fat. If you've already tried it, you know it doesn't work.

Laëtitia managed to lose abdominal fat, thanks to the controlled caloric deficit we put in place.

A difference of about 10 kg (weight loss) and a more toned physique.

Not everything was perfect. Sometimes, I didn’t follow the program, and Jérémy helped me let go of the guilt. Those moments are part of the process, what matters is doing your best and sticking with it. Sometimes, I felt like it was pointless, then I looked at the results. I was proud of myself. I chose to start coaching after gradual weight gain that was worrying me. Despite that, the professionals I saw did not take me seriously, since my BMI was considered "normal." I dreamed of it, and Jérémy made it happen!

How can I describe the incredible life-changing experience of meeting Jérémy, a coach who is educational, kind, and always listening?
The ideal coach, really!

I’ve never exactly been naturally slim, but I have to admit I really went off track in recent years, gaining 20 kg in 5 years without managing to turn things around.
Despite my various attempts, cardio, diet support, EMS electrostimulation classes, and even "good resolutions", none of them worked.
So in the end, I had more or less resigned myself and accepted it: it was too late to change, and I would just live with the consequences of letting myself go for the rest of my life, dissatisfied...
