Why you’re not losing weight, even though you eat healthy

Summary...

It’s enough to drive you crazy! You eat healthy, but you’re not losing weight? Do you want to know why you’re not losing fat anymore? Have you hit a weight loss plateau and don’t know what to do? Do you want to understand why your weight has been stuck for several weeks?

Here, in short, is the one and only reason:

You’re eating too many calories

  • Even if you think you’re following your plan to the letter.
  • Even if you think you’re being careful about what you eat.
  • Even if you think you’re eating "healthy."
  • Even if you think you’re eating better than before.
  • Even if you’re doing cardio to lose weight.

We’re convinced you’re putting in a lot of effort to lose those pounds.

But we’re sorry to have to tell you this so bluntly: you’re eating too many calories. At the very least, you’re eating more calories than your body needs to lose fat, even if you’re convinced otherwise.

"Why am I not losing weight" is certainly the question we’ve been asked the most since we became online fitness and nutrition coaches specializing in weight loss.

The fact remains: you’re not losing body fat because, one way or another, whether you realize it or not, you’re eating more than you think.

And in the seven thousand words that follow, we’re going to do everything we can to explain why you’re not losing weight anymore and how to break through this plateau.

Let’s do a quick test.

The rules are simple. We’re going to list several foods below, and all you have to do is guess the approximate number of calories in each one.

Sound good? Cool. Let’s begin.

How many calories are in each of the following foods:

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil?
  • 1 handful of almonds?
  • 1 Lindt chocolate ball?
  • A Big Mac?

Write down your answers somewhere, because we’re going to come back to this in a few moments. You’ll be able to check how close your calorie estimates are to the truth in the notes at the end of this article.

But first, we’re going to take a little detour because until we get rid of these weight loss myths, we’re not going anywhere.

Metabolic crash and a slow metabolism

Metabolic crash is the crazy idea that if you eat too few calories for a prolonged period, your body stops burning fat. In fact, it would even start doing the opposite: you begin gaining weight "even though you’re only eating 800 calories."

Does that sound familiar?

So, how much truth is there to it?

  • The truth: when you reduce your calorie intake, more specifically when you start losing weight, there is in fact some slowing of the metabolism.
  • The unfounded part: because of this low calorie intake, your body decides to fight against your desire to lose weight. It enters the twilight zone of a parallel world. A world where the laws of thermodynamics stop existing, which leads to no fat loss, or worse, makes us gain fat despite an absurdly low number of calories.

Here’s what really happens: the fact that you weigh less means your body doesn’t need as many calories to stay alive.

Let us explain that strange sentence this way: look at the circle below. Let’s assume, for illustration purposes, that this circle serves some purpose. And for it to serve that purpose, it needs energy, represented by the smaller circles inside it.

Jérémy draws a circle.

If we reduce the size of the circle, it won’t require as much energy as its larger "former self." So it makes sense to reduce the amount of energy needed by removing some of the circles inside it.

Jérémy draws a circle smaller than the previous one.
The unfilled circles represent the circles [energy] that we removed. The gray dotted circle is a reference to its larger former self.

Now, that same circle, smaller, needs less energy to keep functioning. If we keep reducing the size of the circle, we also have to remove more of the smaller circles inside it, because it won’t need as much energy to keep doing so.

Jérémy draws a much smaller circle.

A similar process happens with our body: when you start losing weight, your body needs fewer calories (energy) to keep functioning than it did when you were heavier. The leaner and lighter you become, the fewer calories your body needs to stay alive and function.

Jérémy draws 3 characters, from heaviest to leanest.
The number of calories your body needs when you weigh 80kg is higher than the number of calories your body needs when you weigh 60kg. The figures shown are arbitrary, for illustration purposes.

This natural process is called adaptive thermogenesis and, as the name suggests, the metabolism has adapted to the lower energy needs of our new, lighter, leaner self.

Studies have shown that even when a lot of weight is lost, the actual change in basal metabolic rate is around 10 to 15%.

Most of the reduction in metabolism comes from decreased physical activity such as NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis). Simply because when people lose weight quickly, they feel less energetic and are less inclined to move around. It’s a natural process that needs to be taken into account, and using an activity tracker to monitor your step count can help you see how your activity level changes with weight loss.

Here is the study that proves everyone can lose weight!

2 men are eating and another is having his waist measured by a scientist.

See the guys above who look like they came straight out of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video?

They are three of the thirty-six men from the famous Minnesota Starvation Experiment.

The experiment was carried out to study the physiological and psychological effects of severe starvation.

Let us explain what they did: 36 men were put on a 6-month starvation diet consisting of two meals a day for a total of 1560 calories. Their calorie intake was reduced even further throughout the study to maintain weight loss. In addition to the relatively low calorie intake, they also had to walk or run 36 kilometers each week.

This was a caloric deficit of about 50%. In other words, they ate 50% fewer calories than their bodies normally need for 6 months. Boom.

We’ll give you a moment to process that... Want to know the result? Alright, let’s keep going.

All the men lost about 25% of their body weight and ended up at around 5% body fat

Which is almost even lower than a bodybuilder stepping on stage in a bodybuilding competition.

Shirtless man, very lean and muscular.

At the end of the study, the men’s metabolic rates had dropped by about 40%. Again, their actual basal metabolic rate only dropped by about 15%.

Two emaciated men.
Look at the photo above, then look at yourself in the mirror: unless you look like the skeletal guy above, you are not in starvation mode.

Now let’s approach the topic logically.

If there really were some dark force preventing people from losing weight because they eat too few calories, then why do 21,000 people die of starvation every day? Strange, isn’t it?

Your metabolism has simply adapted to your new, lighter body weight

So, uh... Are you telling us that we have to put ourselves into starvation mode to lose weight? Are you kidding, Jérémy? Hold on a little longer, we’ll get to that in a second. But first, we still need to look at one more thing...

The case of a slow metabolism

We wrote this full article that helps you figure out whether you have a slow metabolism, and what to do to boost it. If you want, you can go read it now or come back to it once you’ve finished this article.

Let’s keep moving forward.

Do you have health issues?

Some medical conditions can affect weight loss. The most important case being hypothyroidism. This topic is outside our area of expertise. All we’re allowed to say is this: if you think that might be the case, meaning you’ve read this article all the way through and you’re sure everything is in order, then go see a doctor and have your thyroid checked.

So, if starvation mode is a myth, and I don’t have a slow metabolism, what exactly is happening Jérémy?

There are two factors at play here.

  • Inaccurate food reporting
  • Calorie ignorance

The case of inaccurate food reporting

Let’s go back to the game we played earlier.

Do you remember your answers?

The purpose of this exercise was to get you to take a moment to think about how many calories these everyday foods contain. Because the truth is, we are bad, even really bad, at estimating the calorie totals of the foods we eat.

This isn’t just an opinion, it’s a fact. There are tons of studies showing exactly what we’re saying: here and there, over here, over there, there, there ... and there again. In short, it’s a problem that affects everyone.

Misreporting food intake is not exclusive to the general public either. Here is a review of a study by James Krieger from Weightology, showing that even dietitians misreport calorie intake.

The results showed that dietitians underestimated their nutritional intake by an average of 223 calories per day, while non-experts underestimated their intake by an average of 429 calories per day. So while being a dietitian improves the accuracy of calorie intake estimates, it does not eliminate the underreporting phenomenon.

And yes, even people whose job is to juggle calories every day are not immune to error.

Us included.

Let us show you one more thing

This British actress was adamant that she had a slow metabolism. After some investigation, it turned out she was simply misjudging her calorie intake. When she recorded her food consumption in a video diary, she believed she was eating 1100 calories. When researchers checked her actual intake (using doubly labeled water), her calorie total came out to 3000 calories.

Despite keeping a food log, she made a 43% error.

Numbers are abstract. We’re going to make this more tangible.

Imagine your calorie intake is 1,500 calories: 43% equals 645 calories.

Maybe over the course of a day or two, that gap wouldn’t make a huge difference. But if you make the same mistake she did for a week? Well, 645 x 7 days = 4515 extra calories that you "forgot." 4500 calories is the energy surplus needed to store 500 grams of fat.

So let’s just say that over time, we’ve come to terms with it. We are bad at accurately tracking our food intake.

Calorie ignorance

People don’t just not know how many calories they consume, they also don’t know what a calorie is. As Marion Nestlé said:

People have a vague idea that calories have something to do with weight gain or loss, but they don’t know how many calories they consume in a day.

And that’s the problem. When you don’t pay attention to your calorie intake, you expose yourself to all the environmental and cognitive factors that push you to eat more and more, without even realizing it.

Speaking of which...

The obesogenic environment and cognitive errors

As we’re about to show you, there are a multitude of environmental and cognitive factors to take into account when you’re trying to lose weight for good.

If you’re not aware of the calories you consume, you’ll struggle to lose weight and keep it off.

  • Even if you "eat healthy";
  • Even if you avoid "eating processed foods";
  • Even if you "do cardio to lose weight";
  • Even if you "barely eat".

Note that throughout this article, we use the term "calorie-aware." You don’t need to become neurotic about tracking calories, but having an idea of your daily calorie intake goes a long way in helping you make choices aligned with your body transformation goal. The level of precision you want to use will depend on your goals and circumstances.

The environment

Let’s go back a few thousand years.

Ready? Let’s go! There you are, 7,500 years ago, back when we were still hunter-gatherers.

As you can imagine, life was radically different from what we’re used to today. The most important thing being that there was no fast food, no meal delivery apps, not even supermarkets on every corner.

Food was extremely scarce, and the only way for us to access it was to get moving, hunt, and work incredibly hard to earn it.

A few hundred years later, we arrive at the Industrial Revolution, bringing with it the rise of technology and mechanization. With this boom came greater abundance and easy access to food. We no longer have to go get it or work for it to feed ourselves, our food gets delivered to our doorstep with a single click. Thanks, Uber.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Hey, do you know this?

Calorie density

Have you ever craved a food, then looked at the calorie count and thought, "No, that can’t be right, it can’t possibly contain that many calories"?

That reminds us of the time we wanted to try a Cinnabon in a mall in the heart of Bangkok in 2019. Well, we came back down to earth pretty quickly... After checking the chain’s website to find the calorie total of that "harmless little treat," we discovered that one Cinnabon contains 1100 calories for only 290 g of food!

Let’s just say that instantly killed our craving.

The problem? Today’s food is calorie-dense

Calorie density refers to the number of calories relative to the weight and size of food. Fruits and vegetables have low calorie density, while highly processed foods like candy bars, cakes, and donuts have high calorie density.

For example, let’s compare a Cinnabon, which weighs 290g and contains 1100 calories, to a large apple, which weighs about 220 g and contains 110 calories.

Calorie difference between a Cinnabon and an apple.
In the modern food environment, foods are getting smaller and smaller, yet contain two, three, or even four times more calories than their size suggests.

The solution: start counting your calories

Download a calorie tracking app like FatSecret and start learning to think more clearly about what you put in your mouth. Tell yourself this is a necessary skill if you want to succeed in your body transformation!

If you want to go deeper into the topic, we have an article on counting calories where we share our tips.

To help you make peace with your calories and make it more fun, there are several calorie tracking apps. We even developed one ourselves, which we make available to all our Champions. With this app, as long as you fit these calorie-dense foods into your daily or weekly calorie budget, there won’t be any problem.

Highly processed foods can fit into your healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, in all cases, an inclusive diet should be made up mostly of unprocessed foods so you can make sure you’re getting all the essential nutrients your health and your body need to function properly.

But beyond all that, unprocessed foods take up more space in your stomach for fewer calories than processed foods. That matters when it comes to maximizing satiety. You will never be able to fight hunger.

Hunger is the number one enemy of weight loss. Trust us. After trying to fight hunger many times, we can tell you it has won every single time.

That’s why unprocessed foods, such as vegetables, root vegetables, and tubers, should make up 80 % of your diet, and the remaining 20% is there for you to add some indulgence to your meals.

As you know, we’re never hungry for dessert. That’s pure indulgence.

So if you have a sweet tooth like we do, never deprive yourself of the foods you love. That’s the only way you’ll be able to stick to your weight loss diet long-term, without gaining all your weight back because of the frustration you created. A debt always gets paid.

When you start a diet to lose weight, ask yourself this question: can I see myself doing this for the rest of my life?

  • If the answer is no, you need to change that right away...
  • If it’s yes, great. Keep going.

We talked about the problem of eating too healthy in this podcast episode

Food palatability

"Hyper-palatable foods" is the sophisticated term for "this tastes insanely good." It’s the result of the perfect combination of sugar, fat, and salt, also known as the bliss point.

While the media tries to convince us that sugar is the devil incarnate, we can tell you that sugar itself is not what triggers the reward signal.

Have you ever tried eating table sugar by the spoonful? Try it. It’s not very exciting, you’ll see. That white powder that looks like a drug gets blamed for a lot.

The problem is the combination of sugar, fat, and salt that makes foods hyper-palatable and pushes us to want to eat more. Typical junk food, in quotes, like ice cream, pastries, savory snacks, candy, and pizza are the ultimate comfort foods.

When we eat these hyper-palatable foods, they trigger a series of mechanisms in our brain called the "reward system " that make us want to eat more of these foods.

It’s the same system that lights up when people take drugs, drink alcohol, and have sex. The hyper-palatability of food encourages us to eat more and pushes us to keep eating again and again, even when we feel full.

Dr. David Kessler summed up this response perfectly in his book, The End of Overeating:

The current food environment provides so much food deliberately designed to stimulate the reward mechanism in consumers that it overrides biological satiety signals. The factors that discourage calorie intake and promote satiety should work fairly well in an environment that promotes the consumption of nutrient-dense, low-calorie-density foods. But in a food environment that promotes overconsumption of calorie-dense foods, the "eat more" signals dominate the ones that promote satiety.

The solution?

If you notice that certain foods push you to overeat, stop eating them and don’t keep them in the house. The more you reduce your exposure to these foods, the more likely you are to succeed in managing your diet.

Studies suggest that when people reduce the palatability of their meals, they are more likely to successfully lose weight and keep it off long-term.

This is what we’ve put in place for the past 5 years. We were addicted to Golden Grahams cereal! Like a real kid. We had gotten to the point of finishing one box a day. Yes. One box a day. Unable to settle for a 30g serving like the package so kindly recommends.

Cute, right... Even today, we don’t bring cereal into our cupboards so we don’t have to fight ourselves. The flesh is strong, but the spirit is weak.

All these factors form what is called the obesogenic environment.

Throughout evolution, the goal was to eat as much as possible when food was available. The aim was to store as much fat, energy, as possible in order to survive until the end of winter, when food was scarce and hard to find.

Except today, access to food is constant, one click away, and unnaturally delicious, combined with our declining activity levels, we have the perfect formula for rapid fat gain. Careful, though! That does not mean fat gain is inevitable, or that training and eating well are pointless. Let’s not be fatalistic.

In fact, quite the opposite, in all the research we have on people who successfully lost weight and maintained it long-term, it has been shown that training and being aware of how many calories they consume are two key habits.

Cognitive errors

The environment we live in is only half the problem. The second half is not external, but internal, and it all happens in our mind.

These cognitive errors can be just as, if not more, insidious for our waistline than the environment around us.

  • The bad news? Most people don’t even realize they’re making them.
  • The good news? By the end of this article, you won’t be making them anymore.

The healthy effect, or the case of food nutrition labels

The healthy effect happens when consumers think foods marketed as healthier are not fattening, so they compensate for their food urges by eating more of these healthier foods, which leads to extra calorie intake.

Have you ever replaced your square of chocolate with a handful of almonds or a banana because it’s healthy? We have. And so have many of our Champions.

When we start personalized coaching, we ask our clients to send us photos of everything they eat throughout the day. These photos help us better understand their eating behaviors and choices.

In the first few weeks, we always notice the same thing. The 5 p.m. piece of chocolate gets replaced with a nice healthy handful of almonds. Then it gets entered into the calorie tracking app. And that’s when reality hits.

You realize that this healthy snack is very expensive in calories! Welcome to the real world.

  • 1 handful of almonds weighs about 30g, or 23 almonds, and costs 174 calories;
  • 1 medium banana weighs about 136g and costs 121 calories;
  • 1 Lindt chocolate ball weighs about 11g and costs 70 calories.

Careful, don’t make us say what we didn’t say. We’re not encouraging you to eat chocolate and ban almonds from your diet. But the problem is that we try to force ourselves to eat something because we read somewhere that it helps with weight loss. So we deprive ourselves of the things we love. Then we crack!

It’s all about context.

  • You’re not hungry and you want a treat? Have your favorite piece of chocolate.
  • You’re really hungry, choose a food that takes up space in your stomach, like a banana for example.

But there’s another problem too... Olive oil is everywhere. But Jérémy, olive oil is healthy, right?

Well. Yes! And no!

  • 1g of oil = 1g of fat = 9 calories;
  • 1 tablespoon of oil = 12g of oil = 12g of fat = 108 calories;
  • A classic vinaigrette contains about 2 tablespoons of oil and costs 216 calories.

216 kcal, not even counting everything that goes with it, vinegar, salad, etc. And here we’re not even counting the oil used to cook the food. So through the cumulative effect, you can quickly end up consuming 500 calories without even realizing it.

Here are other examples of the "healthy" effect.

Orange juice

You know those 100%, natural, organic fruit juices, freshly picked and squeezed by the hands of an angel, right? Let’s talk about them.

Here’s what one serving (150 ml) of orange juice looks like.

__wf_reserved_decorative

Do you remember the calorie total of one Lindt chocolate ball? It’s the same. Now, we don’t know about you, but we’ve never seen anyone drink a 150 ml serving. Most people fill the glass to the top.

So here’s what a real glass of juice looks like, 350 ml, or 170 calories.

__wf_reserved_decorative

If you drink two glasses of fruit juice a day because you’ve always been told it’s "healthy," you’re consuming 350 calories without even realizing it. Even if those juices are labeled "100% natural" and packed with all sorts of wonderful things, vitamins and minerals... calories still count, and they add up fast. Very fast.

Especially since juice is not filling the way it’s supposed to be in its original form, in other words, a fruit you actually bite into, the more you drink your calories, the more calories you’ll consume.

Glug, glug, glug. Before you get full from liquid, you’ll blow past your calorie count.

Look at what a "real" orange represents in calories:

A medium orange provides 62 kcal and 15.4g of carbohydrates.

Two glasses of orange juice represent the same number of calories as 6 medium oranges. In your opinion, which one is going to satisfy you more if you’re hungry?

The case of diet foods / low-calorie foods

There is nothing inherently wrong with "diet" products. In fact, they can even be helpful during a period when you’re trying to lower your calories to lose fat. So it can be useful to include them in your diet so you can enjoy yourself without going over your calorie budget.

The problem with these diet foods is that people wrongly think they can eat as much of them as they want because they are "diet foods." These foods may be "low calorie," but they still contain calories, and calories still count. And they add up fast.

Beyond these diet products, with the rise of fitness and strength training in recent years, there has been an explosion of "high-protein" products. You even find them in supermarkets now, whereas before you had to go to specialty stores. You know what we mean, right?

Good. Take a look at these two images.

On the left, you have a popular "healthy" bar. On the right, you have before your eyes the most delicious chocolate bar on this planet.

At first glance, the Nature Valley bar seems better, right? Fewer calories, more protein, less sugar.

Not so fast, champion. Let’s really take a look at these bars.

Calories: 190 versus 250. Bravo. There’s a 60 kcal difference between a "healthy" bar and a "bad" chocolate bar (delicious). We don’t see that as extraordinary.

Fat intake: No difference between the two.

Protein: Sure, some will say the Nature Valley bar contains more protein, but let’s put this back into context: the Snickers bar is not presented as a "high-protein" product, it’s a standard chocolate bar. Nature Valley promotes its product as a "high-protein" food.

Seen in that context, 6 g of protein is not such a big difference. Plus, if a product claims to be high in protein, you might think protein makes up a dominant percentage of the total calories, right?

Well...

Protein only represents 22% of the total calories, while fat represents more than half. We don’t know about you, champion, but based on the numbers, we’d say it would be more appropriate to write high in fat on the packaging rather than high in protein!

If we were to compare this to the currently popular Grenade protein bars:

https://physiqonomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Screen-Shot-2016-08-02-at-13.59.03.png

43% of the total calories come from protein. See the difference?

No, Grenade didn’t pay us to say that. However, if a guy from Grenade reads this article, we’d be more than happy to accept a lifetime supply of free Grenade bars in exchange for the free publicity we just gave them.

More seriously though. A Nature Valley bar may contain fewer calories and may be a better replacement for a Snickers bar during a fat loss diet.

But you see, the "healthy" effect makes us forget the total calorie content of foods. Most people assume that because the Nature Valley bar is "healthy," they can eat more of it without worrying about calories.

Two or three of these bars a day can easily add up to more than 500 calories. That’s more than enough to start gaining 500g of fat in a week. Most of these high-protein products marketed as "healthier" are nothing more than glorified candy bars.

And if you don’t consciously pay attention to the calorie content of these foods, the calories can pile up very quickly. You may even gain weight instead of losing it.

The problem with organic foods

This might get us in trouble, but here we go! Yes. The holy spirit of the food industry: organic products.

Even though studies have shown that organic foods have no additional health benefits compared to conventional foods, people still assume that eating organic is not only better, but also somehow makes them immune to the law of calories. That’s false!

When a food is labeled organic, people assume it contains fewer calories than a non-organic equivalent, and this is fascinating, even when they are told both products contain the same number of calories, they don’t believe it.

We get it, people are hammered with the organic message so much.

Our grandmother is always proud to tell us, eat this chicken, it’s good for you, sweetie, it’s organic! (sweetie is our spoiled little nickname). Except we’ll spare you the count of how much oil was used to make that chicken curry, a typical dish from Réunion. We also reworked her recipe to make it just as good, but lower in calories.

What we want you to understand today is that "healthy" is not the same as "calorie-free." Healthy foods should be the foundation of our diet, but within the broader context of calorie control.

In this New York Times article, the American public was asked for their opinion on foods they considered "healthy." Take a look at this chart they posted.

Results from the New York Times article on healthy foods.

The granola bar is at the top of the list, and even orange juice is on it. See what we mean? Once again, most people pay attention to the types of foods they eat.

The problem? It’s the calorie density of those foods!

  • 10g of coconut oil costs 90 calories, just like olive oil, canola oil, walnut oil, or sunflower oil.

We "forget" what we ate

Do you remember what you ate for breakfast? Do you remember everything you ate yesterday? The day before?

Important point: we are not very good at remembering what we ate. That’s why we eat more than we think.

The size of your dishes pushes you to eat more

Take a look at these two plates.

Two salad plates, a large plate with little food on the left and a smaller one on the right with the same amount of food. It looks fuller.

Which plate do you think contains more salad?

  • The one on the left? You’re wrong.
  • Oh, you picked the plate on the right? You’re wrong too.

These two plates contain the same amount of salad, 70g. This photo illustrates the portion size illusion: larger dishes push us to eat more. We always try to fill the empty space.

The solution: serving food on smaller plates can help you reduce the amount of food you eat and therefore lower your calorie intake.

Everything is relative

One last point before we wrap up this article. People forget this...

The impact of how much food we overeat varies depending on body composition, lifestyle (active or sedentary), height, weight, and sex.

  • A 90 kg man following a 2500-calorie diet per day who overshoots by 300 calories is only dealing with a 13% surplus
  • By contrast, a 55 kg woman following an 1100-calorie weight loss diet who overshoots by 300 calories is dealing with a 27% surplus.

It’s the same amount of calories, but depending on the circumstances, it can range from a harmless surplus to one that can considerably slow down or even cancel out weight loss.

We know, it’s unfair. That’s also why we specialized in body transformation for women.

To conclude

Wow! You’ve just made it to the end of an article of more than seven thousand words about calories and food.

But you, you’re not just an ordinary inhabitant of this beautiful blue sphere. You’re part of the top 1% of crazy people who want to succeed and reach their goal no matter what! Great job.

We hope that after reading this article, you understand that your environment and your cognitive errors can push you to eat far more than you think, even when you think you’re "doing everything right."

That’s why it’s important to have a fundamental understanding of calories and to track your food intake with an app for a certain period of time.

Calorie awareness is our shield against an obesogenic environment that encourages us to overeat. Calorie tracking is a life skill that will help you understand portion sizes and what a real portion looks like at your favorite restaurant.

Over time, you’ll be able to "estimate by eye" the number of calories in foods without having to track them in an app. But first, you need to start with the basics. You learned to calculate using a calculator. Today, you can do simple math without one.

Here are the answers to the calorie estimation game

Food Quantity Calories
Olive oil 1 tablespoon (about 12 g) 108 kcal
Almonds 1 handful (about 30 g) 174 kcal
Lindt chocolate 1 square (about 10 g) 50 to 70 kcal
Big Mac 1 unit 530 kcal

Email us a photo of what you estimated. We’ll be happy to reply.

Before contacting Jérémy, I was overweight. I was still carrying 10 extra kg after my pregnancies. I had been carrying those kilos for 13 years. I tried all kinds of different diets (chronobio, Dukan...) and none of them worked long-term. Honestly, I was really starting to think it was hopeless.

Then I came across one of Jérémy's videos by chance. I liked his approach and decided to start working with him. Thanks to his method, his advice filled with common sense and kindness, I have now lost 10 kg in 5 months, and I've become more toned and built more muscle! I'm back to the weight I was before my first pregnancy, and what's incredible is that I got there without any real frustration. I'm transforming in a lasting and peaceful way. I'm so grateful for all of this.

Thank you, Jérémy.

After trying several programs to get back in shape, I wasn't getting results and, inevitably, I gave up.

I came across Jérémy's website while doing some research, a bit by chance, and I really liked his approach: no diet, no miracle pill, just a science-based method. Despite my apprehension about starting online coaching, I plucked up the courage to book a call with Jérémy. I still wasn't completely sure, but it was going to be the best decision I could make!

I learned a tremendous amount about nutrition and grew to love strength training. After 1 year of coaching, I'm truly very proud of my journey and of my physical AND mental transformation.

Thank you, Jérémy, and your whole team, for your kindness, for this high-quality support, for all the powerful tools you made available, and for everything you taught me.

Despite having a varied athletic background, I was no longer making progress after a difficult ordeal and the effects of menopause. I started coaching in May 2025, I weighed 59kg, and thanks to your method, I lost 11kg of fat mass in 6 months. I also had more difficult moments, moments of doubt, I even wanted to give up, but I kept going.

I understood that progress is built on strength training, recovery, and listening to your body rather than intense cardio and restriction.

Jérémy taught me to look at my body with kindness, to stop being in constant compensation mode, and to understand that making progress is not about punishing yourself, but about building something sustainable with patience above all, and balance. Jérémy also taught me that in nutrition, everything is about balance, consistency, and trusting the process. That you do not make progress by always trying to do more.

I also appreciate his vision of sport, based on health, balance, progress, and respect for the body.

Thank you for your kindness, your listening, and for helping me become the best version of myself.

A revelation! Jérémy Loreau helped me achieve remarkable weight loss in 3 months while keeping a toned body.

I was aiming to lose 4 kg and I lost 8. His training, along with the daily food log, helped me become aware of the calorie intake of our foods and meals, all based on scientific facts.

I finally feel free of my insecurities, and thanks to him and his team, who are very present and supportive, I can only recommend him 200%.

Thank you so much for everything and for this clarity that you learn over time. You have to experience it!

I've done many fitness programs, on my own and with coaches who promised support that, in the end, wasn't really there... as well as many diets and nutrition reset plans with dietitians...

This time, I truly found the program that's right for me. Jérémy and his team are very supportive. It's a program that isn't restrictive or exclusionary at all, but it really helps you understand the importance of the nutrition and physical activity combo, and how metabolism works. Of course, it takes a bit of discipline, but in the end, they're just good habits to build and apply.

I'm thrilled with the result, thrilled with the support, they're very responsive and give excellent advice. I'm 45 years old and I recommend it!

Of course, premium coaching may seem costly at first, but it's a lasting and worthwhile investment, the goal really is to help you become independent quickly.

It was the impact of menopause on my weight and on my mental health that pushed me to start coaching with Jérémy.

It’s been 2 years now, and I feel better than ever in my body. I’ve achieved results I never thought were possible, and Jérémy’s coaching has fundamentally changed the way I eat.

I’ve lost 10 kgs and I’ve never been hungry. I’m more muscular than I was at 30 and in great shape. But above all, I’ve embraced the power of small steps, of those habits that, repeated every day, make it possible to achieve remarkable results.

Jérémy adapts and offers us tailored exercises, updating them with a more difficult version so we can keep progressing, always with enjoyment. He teaches us to let go of guilt when we make exceptions, because it doesn’t change the trajectory. He is surrounded by a professional and friendly team, just like him. And he has built a supportive community that is truly a pleasure to be part of. You see incredible transformations there!

My decision to get support from him was one of the best I’ve made in recent years. It’s worth accepting the investment in yourself, you discover potential you never knew you had, and you come out stronger both physically and mentally. Thank you again, Jérémy!

Gina is a sensitive, kind, available, and professional coach, just like Jeremy. As for the "concrete" results, I lost 10 kg in about 5 to 6 months with the program despite menopause, hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's) that wasn't really stabilized, and suspected lipedema. I managed to start enjoying being active, even though I thought I was completely at odds with any form of sport. My relationship with food changed too, less emotional and more mindful. Signing up for this program was one of the best decisions of my life.

10 months ago, I joined Jérémy's program feeling deeply exhausted, both physically and mentally, with the sense that I'd tried everything without ever being able to stick with it over time.

Living with moderate obesity, I tried different methods, diets, fasting, and even electrostimulation, but I always ended up giving up, with more frustration, more guilt, and extra weight gained.

The real wake-up call came when I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea: my weight gain was no longer just about my appearance or my self-esteem, but also about my health.

With Jérémy, I learned that I could make progress without being perfect, that a transformation journey is not linear, that some periods can be difficult, and that I can slow down or slip up sometimes, without questioning everything.

Today, after 10 months, I've lost 13 kilos: I'm fitting into clothes I couldn't wear anymore, I feel physically stronger, and my workouts are more consistent. A tendonitis I'd been dealing with in my knee has also eased up. :)

The biggest change is this: my relationship with myself and with food. I think I feel more at peace. I accept more difficult moments without feeling guilty, then I refocus on the goal. With Jérémy, I'm building a life balance I can sustain over time.

Over the months, Jérémy has taken a deeply human, kind, and realistic approach: he supports me without judgment, without pressure, while taking my constraints and real life into account, with all its ups and downs. He taught me that I don't have to be perfect, and to accept myself as I am.

Jérémy, I sincerely want to thank you for your support, your listening ear, and all the positive energy you share through the Tribe.

Hello, I'm 52 years old, and I had been struggling for more than 5 years trying to lose weight. I was exhausting myself doing cardio, Pilates, basically trying a bit of everything, and when it came to food, I thought I was eating well.

Nothing worked, neither my weight nor my shape was changing.

I was starting to tell myself that it was simply too late, that menopause would stop me from getting my old body back, until the day I became interested in Jérémy's profile on social media and took the leap. I booked a phone call with him, and on April 2, 2026, we became a team even though we were thousands of miles apart. I immediately got access to his website, which is a true goldmine of information for relearning how to eat and unlearning all the common misconceptions.

I finally understood my mistakes and changed my habits, and within the very first weeks, my body started to change. The strength training programs are clear and adapt to your schedule, no more endless cardio. He is always very available, encouraging, and adapts our program based on our progress.

Having a coach for both training and nutrition really changes everything.

I highly recommend him to anyone who is fed up with yo-yo dieting, fed up with making efforts for nothing, because his method really works.

A difference of about 10 kg (weight loss) and a more toned physique.

Not everything was perfect. Sometimes, I didn’t follow the program, and Jérémy helped me let go of the guilt. Those moments are part of the process, what matters is doing your best and sticking with it. Sometimes, I felt like it was pointless, then I looked at the results. I was proud of myself. Other times, I was extremely consistent and it was absolutely on fire.

Before Jérémy, my body was a real obstacle and I didn’t understand why my weight was going up even though “I wasn’t eating that badly.”

After Jérémy, I understood: eating healthy is not the same as fat loss. There are so many factors to take into account, and I learned them by his side.

The real wake-up call? Physically, I was a little chubby, but my fat is distributed fairly well. To me, I wasn’t at the stage of the disease that is obesity. So I thought I was fine. Going through this transformation was just a way to accept my image in the eyes of others.

Then, as I worked with Jérémy, I understood: fat loss, in my case, is a matter of health, not just aesthetics. My goal changed, and so did my mindset. Being able to make informed choices is priceless.

Thank you for everything.

Looking for a fitness and nutrition coach for women, I came across Jérémy’s website a bit by chance, and I read it from top to bottom. Won over by Jérémy’s information and approach, I decided to go for it.

Here is my feedback on the experience...

As soon as I signed up, I got access to an extremely well-designed website packed with high-quality information. Already having quite a bit of knowledge about fitness and nutrition, I can assure you that both the quality of the information and the amount of information provided are truly impressive.

Nothing is left to chance. You understand everything, absolutely everything. You know how and why you're doing things, it's truly incredible to have so much information of such high quality.

On top of that, Jérémy’s follow-up is incredibly high quality, your training program is tailored to you and your body type, nothing is left to chance. We are in contact with him whenever we want, and he answers all our questions. The follow-up is simply incredible. For me, his coaching truly adapts to you and your personal needs, we are not just a number among many others.

As for me, I’ve already lost a pants size, so yes, it works! But beyond the aesthetic aspect, there is also an inner transformation happening... regained self-confidence, etc.

And the little cherry on top, you join a supportive community that regularly shares its doubts, its successes, and its little life moments.

I can only recommend Jeremy as a coach. You can go for it with your eyes closed. A huge THANK YOU to the team for everything they do every day.

The best decision I made in 2025, and probably in the last 5 years, was starting coaching with Jérémy Loreau.

32 kg gone in 10 months, without medication, miracle products, or surgery.

An intelligent method, a strong community, help when needed, and the method that got me exercising again at 54, with two damaged knees and a tired heart, is perfectly suited to me. I work out at home, with 3 sessions using simple equipment, and I can see the progress, without getting out of breath or bored.

I've been coached by Jérémy since January, and it's just incredible. The results I've achieved in less than 3 months are unbelievable to me.

For several years, I couldn't lose weight or transform my body, and despite my efforts, the pounds kept piling on.

Now I've finally broken that vicious cycle and reached a weight I didn't even dare hope for. On top of that, I learned how to build sports routines that do me a lot of good mentally and don't require too much time or too much pain in the effort. I am sincerely delighted with my program with Jérémy.

With him, the difference is that the program is personalized and targeted. It changes everything. I recommend him.

Try it, you don't have much to lose, tell yourself this is the last program you'll try.

Thanks again, Jérémy.

A wonderful tailored experience and a transformation that went beyond my expectations! I lost almost 10 kilos in 6/7 months without ever feeling like I was making a huge effort.

No frustration, no forbidden foods (yes, yes, fries, raclette, etc., are absolutely allowed), I "just" learned how to properly manage my own energy budgets, calorie intake but also calorie expenditure (no more taking the car for every little thing!), based on my age, lifestyle, and body type.

The training provided is outstanding, and the Championnes community is incredibly freeing and guilt-relieving, always in a good mood. And Gina, my coach, supported me like a princess, always listening, patient, and taking great care of me... A gem ;-)

I gained confidence in my body, and today I feel much more independent when it comes to managing my weight and my health.

Unlike weight-loss programs based on meal boxes (commejaime, etc.), Jérémy makes sure you no longer need him, and in my opinion that's even more important than the number on the scale. Without a doubt, the best investment I've ever made for myself and my health!

Jérémy... what an incredible encounter! Much more than a coach, he is a mentor, a guide toward well-being and fulfillment. His passion is contagious, he doesn't just support us, he transforms us, pushing us to become the best version of ourselves.

Always looking for new methods to help us, he combines expertise and humanity with a unique approach. Thanks to him, I changed the way I see diets... and I changed my life.
Today, I feel strong, balanced, and free. I eat healthy, I enjoy myself, and I understood that it's all about harmony. Training is now a source of joy, a pillar of my daily life. What a joy it is to feel great and wear whatever you want, without constraints or guilt!

Thank you, Jérémy, for your dedication, your kindness, your patience, your humility, and your professionalism. You are not just a coach, you are a catalyst for change, an inspiration to everyone who crosses your path.

Since August 2024, I’ve been coached by Jérémy Loreau, and it has been a real revelation. Before meeting him, I spent two years stuck despite the help of nutritionists and other fitness coaches. I was even told that as I was approaching 40, I had to accept it: my body would never change again.

Jérémy proved otherwise. By following his advice and his method, I finally saw real results where everyone else had failed.

The journey isn’t always linear: I had moments of doubt, periods when my weight stalled, or when I struggled to see my own progress in the mirror. But Jérémy was always there to explain how the body and nutrition work. Understanding what you’re doing changes your whole approach.

Today, my physical goal is within sight, but it’s my mindset that has changed the most. I regained my confidence. I no longer let the numbers get me down. I’ve become positive, and I don’t give up anymore.

If you think it’s “too late” or that you’ve tried everything, trust Jérémy. He doesn’t just give you a program, he teaches you how to succeed.

Finally, a truly personalized program! As for me, I was supported by Gina, an incredibly responsive coach with XXL kindness and warmth, who always tries to find tips, advice, or encouraging words! She went through exactly the same stages, felt the same doubts, celebrated the same small and big victories, and her experience is invaluable. She explains everything gently to help each person make progress. The "training" is very informative but also very accessible, in fact, you need to go back to the basics and take your time to absorb the essential concepts, and Jérémy and Gina are constantly there whenever questions come up. 2 words are now rooted in my life: ROUTINE and PATIENCE because they are the keys to succeeding with this program. That's why it's 5 stars!

I chose to start coaching after gradual weight gain that was worrying me. Despite that, the professionals I saw did not take me seriously, since my BMI was considered "normal." I was often told that "after 40, that's completely common." And yet, deep down, I knew something was wrong. I'm one of those people who prefer to listen to their own feelings rather than blindly trust conventional narratives.

That is where Jérémy made all the difference. He was the only one who truly listened to me, understood what I was going through, and supported me without judgment. He knew how to adapt his coaching to my needs, taking my physical limitations into account, especially those related to a herniated disc.

Thanks to him, I discovered that a so-called "healthy" diet is not necessarily a diet that is right for you. I learned to better understand my nutritional intake, not through restriction, but in order to nourish my body in a more accurate and balanced way.

I also got back into training with enjoyment, through personalized workouts that respect my pace and help me make progress without pain.

Today, Jérémy is part of my daily life. His advice and his words help me stay the course, remain kind to myself, and recenter after a slipup or an unexpected event, without guilt.

I clearly understood that what matters most is not a number on the scale, but the sense of well-being you feel every day: more energy, more confidence, more harmony. Taking care of yourself is a journey, not a destination, and every step counts.

Thank you so much, Jérémy, for your precious support, your patience, and your presence. I am deeply grateful to you.

I’m very happy to have met Jeremy: he’s a very caring coach who helped me become my best self... I only wish I had met him sooner. Beyond a method, it’s a philosophy of life. It works, the physical results are there, and you make peace with food... In short, all good.

I had never worked with a coach before reaching out to Jérémy, 6 months ago, after two back-to-back pregnancies, a lot of weight gained and then lost very quickly, but with major muscle loss, and along with that my self-esteem, my confidence, my physical reflection, and my judgment of this body, which was obviously only bringing to light a deeper inner unhappiness that had settled in and surely intensified over the years, a kind of abandonment of myself. One morning, crying as I looked at myself, that was the wake-up moment. I searched online for "best sports coach comparison", I saw Jérémy Loreau, and intuition made me choose... I immediately visited his website and then.... the before-and-after photos, come on, I took my chance, I went for it. He opened his heart to me, and I really do mean heart, because he is someone who will give to you until you know how to find your way again by yourself. Putting into words what has happened inside me since I started this journey feels impossible, it's so deep, and every day I keep discovering a little more about myself, about true self-love, the kind that does not judge, that observes with complete neutrality and carries us toward the freedom to Be. I am talking here about an inner transformation more than a physical one. Here is a glimpse of what coaching with Jérémy can bring you, the opportunity to look deep within yourself, and to strengthen or rebuild your foundations, in short, to give birth to a new version of yourself, stronger than ever, with the tools to be autonomous FOR LIFE.

I dreamed of it, and Jérémy made it happen!

How can I describe the incredible life-changing experience of meeting Jérémy, a coach who is educational, kind, and always listening?
The ideal coach, really!

I’ve never exactly been naturally slim, but I have to admit I really went off track in recent years, gaining 20 kg in 5 years without managing to turn things around.
Despite my various attempts, cardio, diet support, EMS electrostimulation classes, and even "good resolutions", none of them worked.
So in the end, I had more or less resigned myself and accepted it: it was too late to change, and I would just live with the consequences of letting myself go for the rest of my life, dissatisfied...

Then, this summer, came the wake-up moment: I couldn’t keep up with my sons and my husband or fully enjoy family activities.
Determined to change the course of things and stop suffering through it without reacting, I clearly identified what I needed: support from someone able to help me both nutritionally and physically.

So I typed "sports and nutrition coach" into my browser’s search bar and happened to come across Jérémy’s website, which both intrigued and captivated me.
The transformations shown felt almost unreal to me, real or fake?
After some hesitation, I finally took the leap and clicked "APPLY" to schedule my intro video call.
And I’m really glad I did!

Today, almost 2 months later, I can now say that applying was the best decision I’ve made to take care of myself and my health for the rest of my life.

Far from cookie-cutter programs and conventional wisdom that people follow without thinking, Jérémy’s coaching is serious, supportive guidance that puts the emphasis on learning day after day, the program starts with educational sessions/videos covering the basics of nutrition and physiology, and where you become the driver of your physical transformation, but also your mental transformation.

Understanding what you’re doing and why you’re doing it gives meaning to the process and helps you move forward with peace of mind.

Little by little, it all adds up!
You don’t need to be a high-level athlete or an amazing cook.
It’s possible to start humbly, to avoid getting discouraged by unreachable goals, and then improve a little every day.
Jérémy adapts to each woman’s goals and constraints without ever judging.
He’s an amazing coach, always full of good advice, who guides each woman at her own pace toward the best version of herself.
His teaching style, his support, and his ultra-complete dedicated app combining nutrition tracking, workouts, measurable progress, but also visual progress, evaluation photos, are the keys to success.
I’ve come farther in 2 months than in several years of effort without lasting results.

A huge thank you to you, Jérémy, for helping me regain confidence in myself, for helping me understand that nothing is ever truly lost, and that through learning, consistency in imperfection, and tailored, supportive guidance, with a great coach and his team, it’s possible to become "1% better every day" by taking charge of your well-being and your health, today and for the future!

I reached out to Jérémy after gaining weight following a thyroidectomy, combined with the onset of menopause. I was stuck in limiting beliefs, convinced, after reading many testimonials from women in my situation, that it was almost impossible to lose weight after that kind of surgery and with menopause.

I felt uncomfortable in my body and unable to seriously take control again. Thanks to Jérémy, I learned how to use the app intelligently and manage my calories and macros day to day. I realized just how much of a calorie surplus I was in without even noticing it. I wasn’t eating that much, and yet my little handfuls of hazelnuts were ruining all my efforts.

Today, I enjoy going to the gym to build muscle and seeing the results come in. Jérémy is a motivating, kind coach who is always there to support and encourage. In barely one month, I’ve already lost 4 kilos! I feel so much better, fitter, and motivated to go all the way and get back to a body I feel good in.

A huge thank you to you, Jérémy, for your support and your energy!

Jérémy Loreau is an EXCEPTIONAL coach whom I strongly recommend to all women who want to regain their health, their energy, a body they feel good and strong in, but also a mindset that will allow them to build the life they want, with the place they aspire to, in all its dimensions, whatever their age.

When I contacted Jérémy a little over 5 months ago, I was exhausted and had no longer been able, for years, for decades... to balance my professional life and taking care of myself. I had become sedentary even though I fundamentally need to move, and always have, while respecting my health.

Menopause and health issues had quickly made the imbalance worse, and a certain kind of poor consumption too. I was sinking. I needed the presence of someone highly competent, highly precise, highly attentive, deeply genuine, and highly adaptable to bounce back, and I found that person in the jungle of offers flooding the internet. And I feel incredibly good now, in a lasting way, for the first time in almost 57 years. Because I learned how to balance my weeks in terms of nutrition, physical activity, and stress thanks to Jérémy's coaching.

For me, concretely, what is Jérémy's coaching?

  • Advanced nutrition education with a top-tier tech app that keeps evolving because Jérémy truly cares about the well-being of every woman he coaches. His deeply supportive presence and expertise allowed me to adapt and become genuinely stronger in just 5 months because I now know how to handle every possibility while respecting my TRULY individualized nutrition guidelines, with... freedom.
  • Advanced education and a program focused on strength training, with every adaptation imaginable, whether you train at home or in a gym, whether you're a beginner or not, whether you want to improve your athletic performance or rediscover the joy of moving, whether you're overweight or not.
  • Access to tasty yet healthy recipes, aligned with every profile (omnivore, vegetarian, vegan) and with the personal goals of each woman being coached.
  • EXCEPTIONAL personal follow-up across nutrition, training, mindset, and emotional well-being, taking into account every starting situation, whether you have a lot of weight to lose or much less, like me, whether your health situation is difficult or less difficult, taking life's ups and downs into account, we all have them, with so much gentleness, accuracy, wisdom, AND precision.

Jérémy, and his whole team, allowed me to take the reins of my energy for the first time in my life. I will always be sincerely grateful to them, and I encourage you to give yourself this extraordinary experience.

Exceptionally skilled HUMAN BEINGS, 100% committed to you, with an authentic voice, who don't sell you a dream but offer you extraordinary coaching, toward a life force and freedom that, like me before, maybe even you yourself, would not imagine possible in this world.

Jérémy, and your whole team, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
